Hercule Poirot, Masterpiece Of The 20th Century By Agatha Christie
There are a multitude of reasons why Dame Agatha Christie is referred to as the Queen of Crime, and this short Belgian detective, with his grey cells and patent leather shoes, is one of the greatest. Another reason is that she's statistically the world's best selling fiction writer of all time. But all that would have never happened if not if she hadn't invented Hercule Poirot.
First introduced to the world in 1920, in "The Mysterious Affair At Styles",(which makes it 100 years this year), Hercule Poirot soon swept through the ranks to be known as one the world's most well known fictitious detectives, only behind one Sherlock Holmes. But Hercule Poirot is quite different, and very unique.
First of all, unlike his Greek eponym Hercules the demigod, Poirot is a LOT less given to physical endeavors. (by the way, eponym is the opposite of namesake) Poirot scoffs at activities for which Sherlock Holmes is famous, such as sniffing cigarette ash and rolling on the ground in search of clues. Poirot, is more of a thinker, and he's always using "order and method", and his own "little grey cells", to solve his cases. He is less focused on the crime scene and more focused on the psychology of the criminal.
And he is almost never alone in his quests. Joining him on the majority of his cases is Captain Arthur Hastings. Based on Holmes' Dr. Watson, Hastings too narrates the cases of which he is part of. This means that the books are written in two forms, second person narratives or third person. Also featured is Miss Lemon, Poirot's excessively efficient secretary, who loves order and method as much as Poirot himself.
Hercule Poirot may be an ex policeman, but he is also a man. Sometimes without scruples, as he's not above reading other's letters. But always thoughtful, if a tad arrogant. Atleast three books feature Poirot not doing what is lawfully correct: Poirot once saves the criminal for a crime with great moral justification, and in another story he allows the murderer to commit suicide inorder to save his reputation and family name.
I can write tons of things on Hercule Poirot, like his love of symmetry, his love of his mustache, and so on and so forth. But I won't, cos you gotta read it yourself to enjoy it more.
Action packed and unpredictable, these books you will definitely enjoy. But be warned, they'll force your mind to rid itself of all lethargy and pay tribute to the queen of crime at the very end!!
